A Fling at Spring

Gardening Gone Wild has gone wild with their May photo contest. The theme is Spring Fling and since I’ve been having problems getting to my blog to post, I was determined to persevere  and send it in before the deadline.

My favorite place to fling about spring is at the local greenhouse. The owner is into topiaries so there are always fun display. There always seems to be a party atmosphere and the customers and staff are all ready for a good time.

A grand entrance with a carousel topiary. It really does rotate around.

An elephant points the way to the main greenhouse.

Something new this year. A Spanish villa along the front of the  greenhouse. Love the colors.

with a fiesta of colors inside as well. This is my photo choice for the contest.

Getting close to the final checkout.

Aahh, made it to the gate! More happy colors.

The back of my car full of treasures, soon to be potted up for window boxes and large containers.

  1. Whoa! That looks like a fun garden center! What is its name, and where is it? If it isn’t too far, I might have to take a treck over to check it out.

It’s located on the east side of Kalamazoo County, where we have lots of greenhouses and a big bedding plant industry. Riverstreet Flowerland is my favorite – besides annuals, they have a great selection of perennials. The best is in August when they have a firefly sale. Being a greenhouse, they have no real lighting but for this sale they string small christmas tree lights all over and customers bring flashlights to scout out the deals. Everybody is in a party mood. If you want to check it out, their website is http://riverstreetflowerland.com/

hey jill, i especially love the topiary pictures, the giraffe is awesome! after reading your post i realized that i’ve been to flowerland many times – my grandma lived in the ‘zoo, and my mom and i would frequent this flower mecca every spring to find her the perfect hanging basket for grand/mother’s day… thanks for the nice stroll down memory lane…

Glad I could help with the memories. I have to go back this weekend to get more annuals for our Branch Library’s Rainbow Garden – Red Salvia, Large Orange Marigolds, Large Yellow Marigolds, Purple Petunias and Blue Ageratum create a rainbow of color outside of the children’s department.
