Bloomin’ Hyacinths

Weather: Today was a sunny day with the temperature reaching a balmy 38 degrees F.  Icicles dripped and crashed from the roof to the ground.

As soon as I walk into the house I can smell it. The sweet perfume of blooming hyacinths. I placed them in the basement for their cooling down period in November, then brought them up about 2 weeks ago. The blooming began this week, about two weeks earlier than expected. I’ve got them at the big window on the stairs landing and their scent fills the whole house. Right now, with the gray of winter never seeming to end, it gives me a big lift.

One thing I don’t understand. I bought the bulbs at the same time, got them ready and put them in the basement at the same time and under the same conditions, but they don’t seem to bloom at the same time. How come?

Enter, sweet Hyacinth. Come in, lovely Hyacinth. Let spring and sweet Hyacinth come in.      – From the musical “Tricks” based on Moliere’s “Scapin”

They are beautiful! Sometimes when you have different colors and cultivars of the same plant, they are preset to bloom at certain times, not always the same time. It is normal.

I don’t think I’ve been seeing your blog on blotanical picks, but my memory isn’t great.

Well, this was a nice post, with your kitty and the lovely hyacinths.
